At the beginning of the game, Marcus Fenix is released from prison. As Fenix, the player must fight alongside against the Locusts. Gears of War is a third-person action shooter in which seeking cover is very important. With the press of a button, Marcus presses himself against any wall. It is then possible to carefully peek around the corner and shoot. Furthermore, it is possible to jump from cover to cover, ensuring you are a target for as short a time as possible. Players who rush directly into the action will likely not survive the fight.

Cooperation is also important in Gears of War. When playing alone, you always have an AI-controlled team with you, but it is also possible to play through the entire game with two people.
