Dead Space is a sci-fi horror game set in space. The player takes on the role of Isaac Clarke, who earns his living as an engineer on a spaceship. When Clarke arrives at the Ishimura spaceship he needs to inspect, he discovers that the crew has been horribly slaughtered and he encounters terrifying monsters.

The alien monsters Clarke encounters cannot simply be killed; this can only be done with a specific strategy. The player must tactically shoot off the monsters' limbs one by one to stop them. Dead Space is a third-person shooter, so you look over Clarke's shoulder as you fight the monsters with him.

As Isaac progresses through the game, he gradually discovers the horrors that took place on the Ishimura. The tension is built up with this story, but Dead Space also tries to keep the player on the edge of their seat by using cinematic music and jump scares.
