The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, SNES for short, is an iconic 16-bit game console from Nintendo, originally released in 1990 in Japan (as the Super Famicom) and 1992 in Europe. The SNES is known for its colourful graphics, fantastic music and a library full of classics such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid. The device was loved by young and old and played an important role in the golden years of the gaming world.

1. Mode 7 magic:
   The SNES could display impressive rotating and scalable backgrounds using “Mode 7”, a technique seen in F-Zero and Super Mario Kart, among others – revolutionary for its time!
2. Zelda was almost co-op:
   The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past originally had a 2-player co-op mode in early development stages. This was eventually scrapped, but the idea lived on in later Zelda games such as Four Swords.
3. Donkey Kong Country saved the SNES:
   When competition from the Sega Genesis grew stronger, Rare released the groundbreaking Donkey Kong Country in 1994. Its pre-rendered graphics and smooth gameplay gave the SNES a huge boost in popularity.
