Need for Speed: Underground brought a radical change of course for the iconic racing series. Instead of exotic supercars and police chases, everything now revolved around street racing, import tuning, and nocturnal speed duels. Inspired by the early years of the street racing scene and films like The Fast and the Furious, this title delivered an energetic and visually flashy experience that set the tone for an entire generation of racers.

Three interesting facts:

1. First game with a complete focus on tuning
   This was the first Need for Speed title where you could fully customize cars – from spoilers and rims to neon lights and engine parts. Visual tuning was at least as important as performance on the track.
2. No police, pure street racing
   Unlike previous installments, Underground completely omitted the police. The game focused entirely on illegal street races and style points, which was a breath of fresh air within the franchise.
3. Soundtrack with a big impact
   The soundtrack, featuring artists like Lil Jon, Rob Zombie, and Nate Dogg, became an important part of the atmosphere. The mix of hip-hop, rock, and electronic music perfectly matched the underground culture the game was about.
